A Day in the Studio: Behind the Scenes
A Day in the Studio
Coffee. Headphones. Creativity. That's how a typical day in my home studio begins.
09:00 - The Start
Unlike in the photo studio, where I often have shoots at 7 AM, I start music production later. Morning hours are best for creativity – fresh mind, no emails, just me and the music.
My Setup:
- A small but fine workspace
- Headphones (extremely important for details!)
- MIDI keyboard
- Audio interface
- And of course: A large cup of coffee
09:30 - Warm-up
Before working on new songs, I do a "creative warm-up":
- I listen to music that inspires me
- I play on the keyboard for a few minutes
- I review what I did yesterday
Important: Don't rush into perfection. Arrive first.
10:00 - The Productive Phase
Now it starts! The next 3-4 hours are pure production time.
What do I do?
- Continue working on an existing song
- Experiment with new sounds
- Record vocals (when the neighbors aren't home 😄)
- Refine details in the mix
The Biggest Challenge:
Not getting too lost in details. As a perfectionist (30 years of photography experience!), I can spend hours on a single sound. Sometimes I have to stop myself.
13:00 - Break & Perspective
Lunch break is sacred. Out of the studio, fresh air, different mindset.
I often go for a walk and listen to what I produced in the morning. With distance, you hear things you don't notice in the studio.
14:00 - The Technical Phase
Afternoons get more technical:
- Mixing: Balance between tracks
- EQ adjustments
- Compression
- Automation
This phase reminds me of post-processing in photography – it's about getting the best out of the material.
18:00 - End of Day (mostly 😉)
Theoretically, it's the end of the workday now. Practically? Creativity doesn't stick to working hours.
I often have ideas in the evening that I quickly record. My phone is my best friend – voice memos are perfect for spontaneous melody ideas.
What I've Learned
Three Important Insights:
- Routine is important: Creativity needs structure
- Breaks are productive: The best ideas often come during walks
- Finish your work: A published song is better than 10 perfect drafts
P.S.: No, I don't wear a green raincoat in the studio every day. That was just for the photo. 😄
